Penenggelaman artificial reef atau terumbu buatan dilaksanakan di wilayah operasional PT Timah. Program ini menjadi bagian dari inisiatif perusahaan untuk mendukung pemulihan ekosistem laut.
PT Timah telah menenggelamkan ribuan artificial reef yang dilaksanakan di Provinsi Kepulauan Bangka Belitung. Medio 2016-2024, PT Timah telah menenggelamkan 7.680 unit artificial reef. Sebelumnya, pada kurun waktu yang sama PT Timah juga telah menenggelamkan sebanyak 3.105 unit fish shelter dan 1.475 unit transplantasi karang.
Artificial reef yang ditenggelamkan dirancang menyerupai struktur karang alami diturunkan ke dasar laut dengan harapan menjadi rumah baru bagi biota laut.
Penenggelaman terumbu buatan dilakukan secara bertahap dengan melibatkan berbagai pihak, mulai dari pemerintah daerah, komunitas nelayan, hingga akademisi.
Departement Head Corporate Communication PT Timah, Anggi Siahaan mengatakan, penenggelaman artificial reef merupakan upaya perusahaan dalam menyeimbangkan antara kegiatan operasional dan pelestarian lingkungan.
“Melalui reklamasi laut khususnya penenggelaman artificial reef perusahaan berupaya untuk memastikan bahwa ekosistem laut tetap produktif dan dapat dimanfaatkan secara berkelanjutan oleh masyarakat pesisir,” kata Anggi.
Selain menumbuhkan kembali habitat ikan, penenggelaman artificial reef diharapkan mendorong tumbuhnya wisata bahari berbasis konservasi di masa depan.
Program ini telah berjalan sejak beberapa tahun terakhir dan terus dikembangkan secara berkelanjutan. Perusahaan juga melakukan pemantauan rutin terhadap efektivitas artificial reef, termasuk pertumbuhan karang alami yang menempel serta kehadiran spesies ikan di sekitar area penenggelaman.
Anggi menambahkan, selain menenggelamkan arificial reef program reklamasi laut yang dilakukan PT Timah diantaranya ialah restocking cumi, penanaman mangrove, pemasangan penahan abrasi dan lainnya.(Yuko)
