KB Geo Bonanza menjadi armada eksplorasi dengan teknologi pengeboran terbaru menggunakan sistem coring dan metode vibrasi yang didukung sistem Jack-Up Platform untuk positioningnya, yakni rig yang dapat diangkat hingga di atas permukaan air dengan bantuan konstruksi tiang sebanyak 4 titik atau yang disebut “spud”. Hal ini menjadikan kapal lebih stabil pada saat melakukan kegiatan pengeboran.
Dengan mekanisme tersebut, sampel bor yang dihasilkan memiliki kualitas yang lebih baik dengan batas-batas lapisan dan ketebalan litologi lebih akurat. Bahkan untuk recovery sampel bor berada dikisaran 95 hingga 100 persen, berbeda dengan hasil sampel di unit kapal bor lainnya yang berada pada kisaran 75 hingga 85 persen. Hal ini menjadikan KB Geo Bonanza diperuntukkan sebagai quality control (QC) untuk validasi dan konfirmasi data cadangan.
Keunggulan lainnya dari sampel bor yang dihasilkan KB Geo Bonanza yaitu analisis sampel yang ditargetkan juga untuk mengidentifikasi mineral ikutan selain timah, sebagai upgrade dari analisis sampel bor kapal lainnya yang hanya berfokus ke mineral timah.
Kapal yang dibuat sejak tahun 2016 oleh PT DAK anak usaha PT Timah ini sudah melakukan pengeboran dibeberapa titik di pulau Bangka sejak tahun 2018 di wilayah Laut Air Kantung dan Laut Sampur.
Saat ini KB Geo Bonanza sedang melakukan kegiatan eksplorasi di laut Cupat Dalam. Dalam periode waktu 1 tahun, dibutuhkan waktu selama 2 bulan untuk reparasi tahunan (repta) guna menjaga performa kapal.
