Jika ia mau berada di barisan Belanda—misalnya menjadi anggota Poh An Tui, laskar bersenjata orang-orang Tionghoa yang disponsori Belanda—hidupnya bisa lebih nyaman. Namun, ia memilih berdiri di sisi Republik. Sejak zaman Jepang, Tony Wen yang pernah bekerja sebagai penerjemah pindah ke Solo. Menurut Yong Mun Cheong dalam The Indonesian Revolution and the Singapore Connection, 1945-1949 (2003:130), di era itu ia bergiat dalam Perserikatan Rakjat dan Boeroeh Tionghoa di Surakarta sebagai manajer bagian olahraga. Setelah Jepang kalah, ia menjadi wakil presiden dalam serikat tersebut. Tony Wen telah memperjelas dukungannya kepada Republik, setidaknya sejak April 1946. “Ia terang-terangan menjawab keragu-raguan masyarakat Tionghoa dengan menyatakan berkiblat ke Republik yang baru,” tulis mantan menteri Oei Tjoe Tat dalam Memoar Oei Tjoe Tat: Pembantu Presiden Soekarno (1992:52). “Ia menyatakan tekadnya untuk lebih memperhatikan kepentingan rakyat kecil, khususnya kaum buruh.” Pada masa revolusi, Tony Wen dikenal sebagai pemimpin dari Barisan Pemberontak Tionghoa (BPTH) di Solo. Di sisi lain, sepengakuan mantan Wakil Presiden Adam Malik dalam Mengabdi Republik Volume 2 (1978:5), Tony juga menjadi penyerang tengah kesebelasan PSIS (Solo) yang kala itu cukup ternama. Tak cukup di situ, Tony Wen sebagai pedagang juga turut menyediakan logistik bagi tentara Indonesia yang saat itu morat-marit. Tony juga tergabung dalam International Volunteers Brigade (IVB) alias Brigade Internasional, kesatuan tentara yang terdiri dari orang-orang (keturunan) berbagai macam bangsa Asia (Cina, Filipina, Malaysia, India, dan Pakistan). Menurut Arsip Kementerian Pertahanan nomor 1735: Laporan harian Kementerian Pertahanan Bagian V Kepada Menteri Muda Pertahanan tanggal 30 Oktober 1947, pada IVB ada orang-orang dari Filipina yang dipimpin Ir. Estrada, orang-orang India yang dipimpin Abdulmadjid Khan serta orang-orang Malaya yang dipimpin Adnan. Dalam arsip yang sama dituliskan, Brigade yang sekretariatnya berada di Jalan Poncowinatan 50, Yogyakarta ini terdiri atas bagian ketentaraan, ekonomi, sosial dan penerangan. Tak semuanya aktif di front pertempuran. Dari golongan tadi, orang-orang India-lah yang tergolong aktif bertempur. “Yang sudah turut berperang di medan Gombong semua orang-orang India, sedang pasukan Tionghoa di bawah Tony Wen sampai sekarang (20 Oktober 1947) hanya menjalankan latihan belaka,” tulis laporan Kementerian Pertahanan Bagian V itu. Tony pernah terlibat juga dalam penyelundupan candu ke Singapura sekitar tahun 1948. Junus Jahya dalam Catatan Seorang WNI: Kenangan, Renungan & Harapan (1989:8) mencatat Tony Wen, bersama John Lie, terlibat dalam usaha penyelundupan untuk membiayai perjuangan Republik Indonesia.

Dari Singapura, yang dikenal sebagai pasar gelap senjata api, dia menyelundupkan senjata untuk Republik. Dia kucing-kucingan dengan aparat Singapura, sampai akhirnya tertangkap. Soal penyelundupan ke Singapura itu dicatat oleh Sam Setyautama dalam Tokoh-tokoh Etnis Tionghoa di Indonesia (2008:24). Pada 1948, Tony bersama Soebeni Sosrosepoetro dan Karkono Komajaya dan dibantu Lie Kwet Tjien menyelundupkan candu ke Singapura untuk dibelikan senjata bagi Republik Indonesia. Tony berangkat dari Pantai Popoh, dekat Tuluagung. Pada penyelundupan kedua, dia membawa 2,5 ton candu. Dalam aksi penyelundupan lainnya, dia membawa 50 kilogram. Penyelundupan itu memakai pesawat amfibi Catalina. Sepulangnya, senjata-senjata yang dibawanya diturunkan di Campurdarat, dekat Tulungagung. Setelah revolusi kemerdekaan melawan tentara Belanda selesai, Tony menjadi anggota Partai Nasional Indonesia (PNI). Dia mewakili partai itu di DPR dari 1954 hingga 1956. Pernah juga dia menjadi anggota Konstituante. Tony juga masih bergelut dalam dunia olahraga. Tak melulu mengurus sepakbola, ia juga bergiat di cabang bola basket. Tony menjadi salah satu pendiri Persatuan Basketball Seluruh Indonesia (Perbasi) pada 23 Oktober 1951. Ialah ketua pertama Perbasi. Pada 30 Mei 1962, laki-laki Tionghoa tampan yang pernah tinggal di Jalan Djawa 62A Menteng, Jakarta, ini meninggal dunia karena sakit dan dimakamkan di Menteng Pulo, Jakarta.(Tirto.Id/ Penulis: Petrik Matana)
