Letak Geografis dan Jalur Ekonomi Penting
Menurut Dato’ Akhmad Elvian, DPMP, seorang sejarawan dan budayawan terkemuka penerima Anugerah Kebudayaan Indonesia, dua anak sungai tersebut bermuara di Sungai Merawang (Baturusa). Lebih dari itu, Kampung Mendara juga berdekatan dengan tambang Cengal (Mines of Tshengal) dan Soonwan (Mines of Soonwan), mengindikasikan signifikansi ekonominya di masa lampau.
Dalam peta kuno “Kaart van het eiland Banka 1819”, posisi Mendara sangat strategis. Ia berada di jalur darat vital yang menghubungkan wilayah Barat dan Tengah Pulau Bangka, membentang dari Muntok hingga Pangkalpinang. Jalur ini melewati Rangam, Beloe, Parit Mestan, Ketapie, Ampang, Jatoan, Bacon (Bakung), Padja Radja Jerorem (Sirem), Mendara, hingga Toutuna (Tuatunu).
Epp (1852:220) juga mencatat pentingnya kampung ini dengan menyebutkan “Kampong Mandara (8 englische Meilen uber Batturussak, an dem Strome, welchen er beherrscht) ” yang menunjukkan dominasi Mendara di wilayah sungai tersebut.
Keistimewaan Kampung Mendara semakin kuat karena menjadi tempat lahirnya dua tokoh pejuang yang mengukir sejarah perlawanan di Bangka: Depati Bahrin dan putranya, Depati Amir. Kedua sosok ini dikenal gigih melawan penjajahan Belanda.
Catatan A. Meis dalam Arsip Nasional (ARNAS-RI) Arsip Daerah Palembang, no.67, halaman 125-169, mengindikasikan bahwa Depati Bahrin lebih memilih untuk tinggal di Mendara. Beliau wafat pada tahun 1848 di kampung ini.
Sementara itu, Depati Amir, pahlawan nasional pertama dari Bangka Belitung, wafat di Kupang, Keresidenan Timor, pada tanggal 28 September 1869 di usia 71 tahun.
Depati Bahrin adalah ayah dari Depati Amir, dan ibunya bernama Dakim. Menariknya, di Kupang, Keresidenan Timor, Depati Bahrin dikenal dengan nama Bahren dan menjadi bagian dari Fam Bahren.
Nama “Mendara” sendiri memiliki kaitan erat dengan kekayaan alam Bangka. Toponimi Mendara berasal dari nama spesifik kayu lokal, yaitu kayu Mendarahan (Myristica iners Blume). Hal ini menunjukkan kearifan lokal masyarakat dalam menamai tempat berdasarkan ciri khas lingkungan sekitarnya.
